Hi, I'm  ilyas.

I am a professor, inventor, scientist, and co-founder with backgrounds in university and industry research and development. In 2018, I started biOOrg3.14 to invent therapies differently for you.

Our mission at biOOrg3.14 is the same as any other drug discovery laboratory. However, we attempt to identify therapeutics using radically different approaches: If it's being done someplace else, you ain't going to find it here. By employing non-traditional approaches, we aim to identify new molecules with unique targets and mechanisms of action; to bring better therapeutics into the world.

Before starting biOOrg3.14, I was a professor at Columbia University in the Department of Ophthalmology for 11 years. In 2010, I co-founded Alkeus Pharmaceuticals, a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company in Boston, Massachusetts.

I was born and raised in NYC and earned a B.A. in chemistry from Bard College. I studied under Ken Houk at UCLA, earning a Ph.D. in computational organic chemistry. I was trained in Natural Products Chemistry and Photochemistry under Koji Nakanishi and Nick Turro at Columbia University.

Some of my work can be found here. My lab has received various awards. My work has been covered by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Nature Magazine, The Boston Globe, and The Boston Herald and nationally televised on FOX News. I have been invited as a speaker by organizations such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, dozens of universities, and business incubators such as MIT's Innovation Lab to discuss how to translate basic research into life-changing therapies.
